Carbonation is one of the two main causes of steel reinforcing corrosion in buildings. It is created by the interaction between the carbon dioxide and acid gases on the atmosphere with the hydroxides in the concrete. By identifying this harmful condition in its early stage, it will facilitate the selection of the proper remediation technique to repair the already damaged areas, and prevent the propagation of this deficiency to the rest of the structure. This chemical testing is used to determine if active carbonation in dry concrete exist.
