Voids and delamination in concrete are indications of separation of layers due to corrosion in the steel, excessive stress in the structural member, intrinsic chemical reaction, poor workmanship during the placing of concrete, improper concrete mix, or the layout of steel reinforcing or post-tensioning strands. Whatever the reason, voids and delaminations in the concrete reduces its strength. Impact sonic-echo testing of structural elements will detect large concrete delaminations and voids inside of the structural member, or underneath slabs on grade. It is a first approximation to define the scope of repairs.
