Uplifted tiles can lead to a trip hazard. The bonding of the tile to the underlayment can be affected by harmful intrinsic properties of the thin-set, moisture underneath, environmental conditions when the tiles are exposed to the environment and preparation of the surface during installation. The adhesion strength evaluates the performance of the thin-set. A bonding pull-out is a destructive test that quantifies the adhesion of the substrate. It is performed by applying a pulling load on the tile until the tile breaks, then measuring the applied pressure and comparing it with regulatory code compliance requirements.
