Corrosion on CT Steel Beams
Visible Corrosion pits on the substrate of the cooling tower support steel beams must be completely removed before painting. Advanced corrosion on the steel beams will impair the support leading to costly replacement of the support system. Therefore, it is essential to assess the rusty areas on the steel substrate during the surface preparation before painting. The premature corrosion of a substrate is often due to the failure of its coating. Major causes of failure are flaws in the finished coating, these include pinholes, holidays, inclusions, thin spots, and bubbles. Collectively referred as a coating's porosity the flaws can be "runs and sags, cissing, catering, pinholes, over coating, or under coating". Non-destructive testing will find these premature deleterious conditions.
