Plaza Deck Slab Reinforcing Steel Rate of Corrosion Testing
The electrical conductivity of concrete is an electrolytic process that takes place by the movement of ions in the cement. This ionic movement happened when contaminants such as chloride ions or carbon dioxide are introduced into the cement mortar. A highly permeable concrete will have a high conductivity and low electrical resistance. Since resistivity is proportional to electrical current flow, the measurement of current circulation is proportional to corrosion activity. Coastal buildings are subject to sunlight exposure, and chemical contaminants in the air. Active corrosion on the steel reinforcing will keep progressing inside of the concrete, escalating the concrete damage, and as result conducting to expensive repairs soon after. The results of the active corrosion testing will facilitate the selection of the proper remediation technique to repair this harmful condition, and preventing the propagation of this deficiency to the rest of the structure. The mapping of reinforcing steel corrosion rate in concrete is done by a resistive meter, and polarization resistance technique.
