Structure Concrete Crack Monitoring
|
Cracks in concrete may represent the total extent of the damage, or they may indicate problems of greater magnitude. Plastic shrinkage, settlement, drying shrinkage, thermal stress, chemical reaction, weathering, reinforcing corrosion, poor workmanship, construction overloads, detailing design errors, concentration of stress, externally applied loads are few examples of cracking types. Evaluation of serious cracks is important to evaluate if they may affect the stability of the building, the future value of the building, whether or not the building can be insured, or future ability to sell the building. Active cracks may be caused by variations of atmospheric or internal temperature, absorption of moisture, reinforcing corrosion, chemical reactions, settlement, or variation in the loading condition versus the original design. The crack gauges monitor the movements across a crack over a period of time identifying the active cracks' direction. The results facilitate the selection of the proper remediation technique to repair this harmful condition, and preventing the propagation of this deficiency to the rest of the structure.
