Slab Concrete Cover on Reinforcing Steel Mapping
|
Concrete provides protection against embedded steel reinforcing because of the highly alkaline compounds in the cement paste. Not enough concrete covering the steel reinforcing allow moisture and contaminants to reach the steel sooner than expected. Those contaminants will corrode the steel creating cracks, delaminations, and spalls in the concrete. Those concrete deficiencies are very expensive to repair once corrosion on the steel reinforcing is active. The results of the testing facilitate the selection of the proper remediation technique to repair this harmful condition, and preventing the propagation of this deficiency to the rest of the structure. The mapping of reinforcing steel in concrete is done by pachometers determining the coverage of concrete, and spacing of reinforcing bars embedded in concrete.
